I am the Paparazzi.

We are lucky enough to get a view of the ocean from our house (once you look past the freeway). We are always looking out and are quick to notice any activity on the sea wall. This past Sunday Tom and I watched as an ambulance, some police cars and lots of people were gathering. Normally we would hop on our bikes just to see what happened but this time we just watched from the window. Thanks to my camera with 20x zoom I got a picture. Just be careful if you are walking on the sea wall, I might just get a photo of you.

We later found out that a woman went into the ocean after her dog and unfortunately she didn't make it out alive. The dog on the other hand was alive. As I told my children, lesson learned. Next time, leave the dog on it's own, they are not worth your life.

A Balanced Diet

I try to make sure my kids are getting the variety in their diets they so need. Kira is a good eater (almost everything you give her), Andrew not so good, and Sean, he prefers sand. When he was smaller I would spend the entire time we were at the beach keeping him from eating it. Now, well, I just watch and laugh and make sure Tom changes the next few messy diapers.

My Ideal Day

A friend of mine was telling me she felt like she was stuck in the movie Ground Hog Day. I was quick to reply, "me too." I then proceeded to think about my days and how most of the time they doesn't work the way I plan. Being the glass half full type of person that I am, I decided that I would type up my "Ideal Day" to remind myself what I am striving for each day when I wake up. Maybe then, I will see more glimpses of success, so here it is.

I wake up at 5:30 AM, shower, dress, brush teeth, eat a healthy breakfast and not need a dose of Diet Coke to get me moving. I get to see Tom off to work with a kiss that involves us both and not just him kissing a sleeping me.

I then get in a good solid hour of uninterrupted work where I respond to all my emails and prioritize what needs to be done that day.

At 7:00 AM I wake up Andrew who bounces out of bed happy and excited to go practice piano. He practices with enthusiasm and doesn't spend 15 minutes with his head on the keys. I whip up a yummy breakfast for my children that isn't cereal and then go wake up Kira. Kira also bounces out of bed, excited for the day and I don't need to physically pull her into a standing position.

Sean wakes up at 7:30, and my children all eat breakfast while encouraging each other and looking forward to a great day at school. Sean does not throw his breakfast all over the floor or paint the table with his milk.

We gather together for morning prayers. The kids then walk to school or ride their bikes. I don't need to wrestle Sean into a car seat while kicking and screaming because he would rather be playing basketball in our front yard. I have remembered all field trips, papers that need to be signed and no one calls to bring them something they have forgotten.

I then come home, put in a some good hours of working where the orders pour in via email. I place multiple orders that don't require 5 phone calls to finalize the details, credit is established, stock is good, and production is quick. Sean plays in the meantime happily and returns everything he plays with to its place.

Sean then takes a long nap, while I continue working. I get a few breaks to pick up the house, do a few dishes and maybe even do a small home improvement job. I even get a few calls into the women I visit teach to express my love and concern and find out how I can help.

Sean then wakes up from his nap, we eat and nicely prepared healthy lunch that isn't packaged or processed. Sean cleans up after his mess, and then plays happily while the kids return home from school.

My afternoon is full of teachable moments with my children where they hang on my every word. We share details of our days and I don't yell and scream about getting homework done, and piano practiced. I know all the answers to Andrew's questions without telling him to "go ask Kira." I even get a small break from work to take the kids to the park.

I then prepare a yummy dinner while the kids help. Sean doesn't throw up, poop, or throw a fit on the kitchen floor while I am cooking. Tom comes homes we are all happy and we eat together in perfect family bliss.

I then go running 4 miles and sprint most of it because my legs don't each feel like they weigh 300 lbs. While I am gone, Sean gets bathed, the dishes are all done and everyone is driven by someone else to where they need to be.

We have family prayer, all together, and no one complains that it isn't their turn. Sean goes to bed early, and I get to play a few games with Kira and Andrew. They then go to bed with out prodding, and Tom and I get 1 hour to ourselves with out interruption. I read my scriptures, say personal prayers, and I fall asleep instantly. No quick thoughts about all the things I forgot to do. I then get a full nights sleep ready for the next perfect day where I wake up from this dream.

Maybe someday it will work out this way, but then again probably not. I guess the point is to just keep waking up and trying. Sometimes, some days, parts will work and I am ok with that.

"Love" Pod, Outdated?

I have started running again now that Sean is sleeping at night and I am one of those runners who has to have the music blasting. While Tom and I were dating, Tom bought me the first edition iPod Mini back in 2004. It was the first year they came out and I was so excited to have it. Next to my engagement ring it is one of my favorite possessions.

While I was in running hibernation this love pod (as Tom calls it) didn't get much use. Now that I am using it again, I am realizing how old it really is and maybe how old it is making me look. Yes mine is small, but next to Kira's Nano mine looks huge. Today while running, I decided I might as well have a boom box set on my shoulder while I run.
Maybe it is time to upgrade?

Mission La Purisima

While in Los Olivos this past weekend we spent a morning at La Purisima Mission State Park. The weather was perfect and it was fun to see how life was lived. I am certain, I would not have enjoyed living at a Mission but it was fun to explore knowing I could leave and sleep in a nice bed that night.

Kira and Andrew loved the activities and were pretty busy exploring. Sean on the other hand preferred to play in the dirt and run free in the open spaces. Thanks to Aunt Marcy for showing us around. It was a great day.
Kira and Andrew making mud bricks.
Mixing the mud with straw, using your feet. So fun!
Sean found his own mud.
Andrew making corn tortillas.
All of us in the church. It was refreshing to see that Sean behaved the same in a Catholic Church as he does in the LDS church.

Sean doing what he loves best, playing in the dirt.
Saying hello to a goat named Luna, that Sean kept calling a dog.

Road Trip

This picture speaks volumes to me. Tom and I have an ongoing discussion about whether or not we need a bigger car. I really never feel the need until we all pile in to go somewhere farther then a few miles. This past weekend we headed down to Los Olivos, near Santa Barbara to visit Tom's sister Marcy, her husband Brad and Tom's mom, Grandma Porter. The trip was pretty good. Who needs extra room when you have electronics, snacks, pillows and music? Kira and Andrew behave pretty well. Sean on the other hand likes to cause some commotion since Kira and Andrew are trapped and within reach.

Sean and Shoes

Sean has figured out that when you put your shoes on, you get to go somewhere. Anywhere is fine with him, and any shoe is good. As you know from my previous posts there are are shoes to be found everywhere in our house. The only problem is it took me 10 minutes to find one of my running shoes today as Sean had been wearing it through out the house.
Here he is trying to put Tom's shoes on.

The Cook gets a Break

Andrew is a Cub Scout and one of his requirements is to cook dinner one night for the family. He also has to set the table, and do the dishes. Monday night he did just that along with a little help from Sean. I tried not to look to closely for fear of what I would see but the food turned out great, and the kitchen was pretty clean when they were done.
Thanks for the night off Andrew.

St. Patrick's Day

St. Patrick's Day is a holiday I don't get that excited about, but Andrew sure did this morning. He woke me up looking like this today, so we made green waffles to add to his excitement. Sean passed on the green waffle for oatmeal with raisins.

Sean's Vocabulary

He is becoming quite the conversationalist. Most of the time he is just talking nonsense but he seems very convinced you know exactly what he is saying. I was hoping maybe he would be our quiet child, but then again how would a quiet one exist in our house full of loud mouths.

So far these are the words I am hearing.

Ball (his most used word)
Mom
Dad
Andrew (he says An-roo)
Kira (he says Key)
Luke (Andrew's friend but Sean thinks he is his)
shiney
Amen Amen Amen (always in threes)
down
done
up
light
bite
off
thank you
cheese
please
wow
uhm
balloon (ball roon)
bus
choo-choo
truck
baby
fish
basketball
bye bye
see ya
later
banana
drink
down
sit
Yea!
teeth
eyes
nose
stuck (everything is stuck)
go
hello (hewo)
apple
dog
Elmo

and...

na-night
(my favorite word at my favorite time of the day)

Barney

Can you possible love and hate something at the same time? These are the feelings I am having these days about Barney. It is a show that Sean LOVES. He watches intently while I get a lot of work done (which is nice), but I keep getting these feelings of wanting to reach through the TV and strangle him.
I hope and pray that my clients can't hear his singing in the background.

The Sky is Falling

Well not really the sky, but the ceiling in our basement bathroom. Last week we discovered that the shower in the upstairs bathroom has been leaking into the ceiling of our downstairs bathroom. The shower liner is shot (yes the shower with the naked lady) and we may be starting a remodel sooner then expected. Along with working full time and caring for the kiddos, I am now spending a lot of time with plumbers, contractors and tilers. Stay tuned for more info on what is to come of this mess.

Darin and Jared, it is times like these I really wish you didn't live in Arizona.

Why I am Grateful for the AAUW.

Each year the AAUW, San Francisco Branch, sends 2 girls from the Pacifica School District to Tech Trek Science Camp held at Stanford University. The Tech Trek Science Camp was developed to encourage girls finishing the 7th grade to explore the fields of math and science. This year, Kira was chosen by the AAUW as one of the two girls to attend the camp this summer. We just got word tonight and we are all over the moon excited for her.
I am thrilled organizations such as this exist. I am even more thrilled they saw something in Kira that lead them to choose her to attend. It is a $800.00 scholarship for the camp, and you have to be chosen to participate. We will miss her for the week she is gone but I know she will be having a blast.
Look for a future post after she has attended the camp with details of her trip.
Way to go Kira!

Does This Make Anyone Else Nervous?

While watching Sean eat his cereal today, I discovered that someone in our house has taught him how to drink from the bowl. I was about the stop him then decided to video it instead. He handled it pretty well, no spills this time but I am not sure I like this idea.

Not So Beautiful Anymore

Last night, while playing Monopoly with Kira and Andrew, I pulled the card that says, "You just won first place in a beauty contest, collect $100.00." I began to boast about my winnings and Andrew quickly blurted out, "Maybe you were beautiful in your 20's." We all busted out laughing (good thing I have a good sense of humor otherwise I would have smacked him.)

I have realized that just like many other parents, I have hit the stage with Andrew and Kira where I have lost any coolness that I might of had left. In there eyes I am just the mom, nothing fancy or beautiful, just mom. Thankfully, Tom thinks I have gotten better with age, and that is all that matters.
